Assemblymember Alvarez Appointed Chair to the Select Committee on Reconnecting Communities

For immediate release:

Sacramento – Assemblymember David Alvarez (D-San Diego) has been appointed by Speaker of the Assembly Anthony Rendon to Chair the Select Committee on Reconnecting Communities.

“I am excited to lead this committee and thank Speaker Rendon for identifying this select committee to help develop recommendations that can address social equity in communities divided by freeways throughout our state,” said Assemblymember Alvarez. “Many communities like Logan Heights and Sherman Heights were devastated by the super highway system. I intend to focus the committee’s work on reconnecting neighbors and creating new opportunities like park space and affordable housing.”

Many communities in California were devastated by the construction of the super highway system which displaced thousands of homeowners in California. The Select Committee will hold informational hearings in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego to learn about how local and national actions damaged the communities. The Committee will use these hearings to develop legislative and budget proposals to address systemic injustices, and inequality.
