Statement on Supreme Court’s Decision to Punt Trump Case to Exclude Immigrants in Census Count

SAN DIEGO – (Friday, Dec. 18, 2020) – Today, California State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) issued the following statement after the United States Supreme Court’s harmful move to put off a decision in outgoing President Trump’s case to exclude unauthorized immigrants from the calculations used to allocate seats in the House:

“This is outrageous. The Supreme Court should have simply ended President Trump’s destructive efforts to tear away representation from our immigrant communities. Taking a wait-and-see approach is irresponsible. Immigrants, and their home states like California, deserve a full count and adequate representation,” Assemblywoman Gonzalez said. “Today’s reckless decision jeopardizes California’s representation in Congress and the electoral college. Worst of all, the highest court in the nation is putting our immigrant communities at risk and saying to them: you don’t matter.”
