SAN DIEGO – (Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020) – Today, California State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) released the following statement after Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Secretary of State Alex Padilla to the U.S. Senate, marking the first time in the state’s history a Latino would serve in the position:

“Governor Newsom made the right choice. I'm proud of the work Secretary Padilla has done to make voting more accessible for every Californian. It's been my great pleasure to work closely with him on our efforts to establish automatic voter registration, expand vote centers, and postage-paid ballots. I know with today's historic appointment, he will make us proud as our state's next Senator and ensure Californians have the representation we need in Washington,” Assemblywoman Gonzalez said.
