Lorena Gonzalez Joins Federal Workers at Sacramento Airport to Protest the Government Shutdown
SACRAMENTO – (Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019) – California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D – San Diego) today marched alongside federal workers at the Sacramento International Airport to protest the government shutdown. The rally, organized by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), highlighted the affect the shutdown is having on its members and their families across the country.
“I’m here today to support these workers because there’s a few things we know in San Diego: we know that we have barriers where we already need them and we know we don’t need any more,” Assemblywoman Gonzalez said. “We know that the people who protect us from bad things happening at our border are currently working without pay. They’re in the Coast Guard, they’re in the Border Patrol, they’re right here in the airports – and those are the folks who actually are trying to keep us safe. And rather than pay them for the work they’re doing, we’re having to fight over Donald Trump’s machismo.
“He’s basically continuing to fight because he cannot admit that he is wrong. Every time he talks about border security he gets it wrong. Every time he talks about the drugs coming across he gets it wrong. He doesn’t even know what happens along our southern border, so this is not a fight about border security. This is a fight about Donald Trump.”
The partial government shutdown that began at midnight Dec. 28 affects 40 percent of the federal workforce—800,000 employees nationwide—who are not getting paid during this time.
