Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher Wins Unanimous Approval for Pregnancy Leave for School Employees
SACRAMENTO – (Wednesday, May 10, 2017) – California State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) today won unanimous, bipartisan approval of her legislation that requires school districts and community college districts to offer paid pregnancy leave to their female employees.
“School districts should be offering paid pregnancy leave to the women who work for them. It’s patently unfair to make women use sick leave and vacation time for pregnancy-related medically necessary absences, or to recuperate after childbirth. We know these kinds of discriminatory leave policies are costing us good teachers because they don’t want to be penalized for having a baby, and that needs to change,” Assemblywoman Gonzalez Fletcher said.
Assembly Bill 568 will require school districts and community college districts to provide an employee paid leave when childbirth and pregnancy require her to be absent for a minimum of six weeks for pregnancy, miscarriage, childbirth and recovery.
