Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher Reproductive Health Non Discrimination Bill Cleared by Assembly Labor Committee
SACRAMENTO - (Wednesday, March 29, 2017) - California State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) today won approval by the Assembly Labor Committee for her legislation that will prevent employers from discriminating or retaliating against women for their personal reproductive decisions. AB 569 was approved on a vote of 4-2.
“We know there are employers who cross the line by invading the privacy and personal lives of the women who work for them, and far too often women are punished financially for becoming pregnant and having children. It’s unacceptable,” said Assemblywoman Gonzalez Fletcher. “A woman should never face repercussions in the workplace for her reproductive choices.”
Over the last several years, incidents have come to light across California where women have been punished for the reproductive decisions they have made, including some women who have been fired for becoming pregnant while not married. AB 569, known as the Reproductive Health Non Discrimination Act, would combat the growing invasion of women’s privacy by making it illegal for employers to fire women for their reproductive health choices. The legislation makes it clear in state law that employees cannot be required to sign “codes of conduct” that restrict their reproductive choices.
