Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher Bill Would Make Deported High School Seniors Eligible for Diplomas
SACRAMENTO – (Friday, February 16, 2018) – California State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) today introduced a bill that would allow California high schools to grant diplomas to seniors in good standing who are deported before they’re able to finish school.
"These are kids who are being ripped out of school against their will and then sent to countries where they have to restart their lives," Assemblywoman Gonzalez Fletcher said. "We can't stop the federal government from enforcing asinine immigration policies but we can make the transition easier for California students who get deported their senior year."
The bill, AB 3022, is particularly important given the Trump administration’s assault on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Many high school students who are register as Dreamers may soon find themselves subject to deportation, given Trump’s decision to end the program on March 5. More than 200,000 Dreamers live in California. AB 3022 would apply not just to Dreamers but to all students in good standing who are deported. A student must have a 2.0 GPA or higher to be considered in good standing.
This bill is not without precedent. Over the decades, a number of states passed laws enabling military veterans to receive their high school diplomas if they were drafted or otherwise served in the Vietnam War or previous military conflicts.
