Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher Bill Will Help Propel the Chula Vista Bayfront Project

SACRAMENTO  – (Thursday, February 15, 2018) – California State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) today introduced a bill that will transfer a parcel of state land in Chula Vista to the San Diego Unified Port District, a necessary step in helping the Chula Vista Bayfront project move forward. The project will create jobs, protect sensitive South Bay wetlands and improve beach access for locals and visitors.

“This is a project with wide-ranging benefits for the South Bay and I’m happy to play a part in moving it forward,” Assemblywoman Gonzalez Fletcher said. “This project is good for the local economy, good for the environment and good for people who want to enjoy all the natural resources that the South Bay has to offer.”

AB 2646 is a necessary step under a 2010 agreement that allows the State Lands Commission to transfer a 97-acre parcel of land in Chula Vista to the Port. Under the 2010 agreement, the land must be used for open space; to promote public access to the coast; and to protect sensitive wetlands. This land transfer is a key step in developing the Chula Vista Bayfront project. Local agencies and stakeholders have been planning the Bayfront project for years. The development will include an RV park as well as a resort and convention center. The project will create new public parks; provide long-awaited, enhanced shoreline recreation; and protect, promote and enhance the area’s environmentally sensitive resources. As part of this development, an existing RV park within this parcel of land must be moved and reconstructed, a process that can’t begin until the land is transferred to the Port.

"I want to thank Assemblywoman Gonzalez Fletcher for ensuring the continued progress on the Chula Vista Bayfront,” Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas said. “This partnership with leaders in our state Legislature, like the Assemblywoman, is critical for our regional growth."
