Gonzalez Collects a Record 271,000 Diapers for Young Families
SAN DIEGO – (Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018) – Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) will celebrate a record 271,000 diapers donated to the 80th Assembly District’s annual Diaper Drive at her 6th Annual Holiday Gathering on Thursday.
Tens of thousands of diapers will arrive at Border X Brewing on Thursday, Dec. 20 before some of the donations are taken to the San Diego Food Bank, which established a Diaper Bank several years ago as a direct result of Assemblywoman Gonzalez’s popular annual event to gather diapers for local families. Donations will also be accepted at the annual Holiday Gathering. Of those diapers already donated, 102,000 have been delivered to families living in Tijuana’s resource-depleted refugee shelters.
Other donations raised this year for the 80th Assembly District include approximately $20,000 for the Diaper Bank, more than 150,000 baby wipes and nearly 50,000 feminine products, with more donations expected on Thursday as well.

Addressing the issue of diaper affordability has long been a focus for Gonzalez. She successfully secured $10 million in the 2017-18 state budget to provide diapers to low-income families, and for the upcoming legislative session she has re-introduced a bill, Assembly Bill 66, to make diapers for the youngest Californians tax exempt.
