Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Celebrates Permanent Diaper Tax Relief In Proposed State Budget

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO – (Friday, May 14, 2021) – Gonzalez’s long fought for policy to make children’s diapers exempt from the state sales tax is set to expire on July 1, 2023. Today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the proposed 2021-2022 budget would permanently enshrine this tax exemption in state law.

“We've worked tirelessly for more than six years to address the very real problem of diaper need. I'm overjoyed that California will finally adopt permanent tax relief for parents struggling to afford the costs of diapers," Assemblywoman Gonzalez said. "The costs of raising a child gets more expensive every single day. This bit of relief can go a long way in making the lives of working parents a little easier."

This tax break will give the average family in California $100 to $120 a year per child, or enough to diaper a child for a full month.
