SACRAMENTO — (Wednesday, April 3, 2019) — An effort by California State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) to protect workers from employment misclassification passed its first major legislative hurdle on Wednesday when the Assembly Committee on Labor and Employment approved Assembly Bill 5 on a 5-0 vote.
Assemblywoman Gonzalez released the following statement after the committee passed AB 5:
“Today the California Legislature took the first step in making it clear: your business cannot operate in our state if you are using misclassification to game the system. As lawmakers, we will not in good conscience allow free-riding businesses to continue to pass their own business costs onto taxpayers and workers. It’s our job to look out for working men and women, not Wall Street and their get-rich-quick IPOs.”
