A recent investigation by PBS Frontline has shined a light on an awful problem that's been in the shadows too long. Janitors - largely minority and largely women - have been targeted for sexual assault and abuse while working at night in empty offices, often alone.

We're taking steps to expose this problem and do something about it with my bill AB 1978. It just passed the Assembly and we're working to make it law. Part of that process is making sure we educate our community about the dangers faced by our friends and neighbors on the job.

Join us for a FREE screening of Rape on the Night Shift, a moving film that investigates the sexual abuse of immigrant women in the janitorial industry. This event will be co-hosted by SEIU-United Service Workers West, ACLU San Diego and Imperial Counties, and the Lawyer's Club of San Diego.

Friday, June 10
5 p.m.

Sherman Heights Community Center
2258 Island Ave.
San Diego, CA 92102

We will be having a panel discussion following the film. Please RSVP by June 8th as we continue to raise awareness and work towards some legislative protection for our janitors.

As November begins, Covered California has also started an open enrollment period for anyone who is currently uninsured or interested in changing their health insurance. It's an important opportunity to ensure you and your family are healthy and  prepared for the unexpected in the future.

Covered California is aimed at uninsured Californians, but anyone who is eligible can sign up and no one can be denied or penalized for a pre-existing condition. In addition, you could be eligible for federal subsidies to help pay premiums if your family qualifies for financial assistance.

Millions of people have already signed up for health coverage through Covered California and its sister programs across the country. If you aren't covered yet, visit to take advantage of open enrollment beginning this week and lasting until January 31, 2016.
